Recognition for a lifetime of work: Duluth Clinic pediatrician is honored by the American Academy of Pediatrics

Date: 6/3/2007
Duluth Clinic Pediatrician Michael Bronson, MD, is receiving the 2007 Lifetime Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. An award presentation took place at the group’s annual dinner in Minneapolis Friday.

“I feel honored that they think I’m worthy of it,” says Dr. Bronson, who was nominated for this award by his colleagues at the Duluth Clinic.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is an organization of 60,000 pediatricians and pediatric specialists. The state chapter of the academy gives the award annually to a physician whose lifetime of contributions to pediatrics has had significant impact on the lives of children.

Bronson began practicing at the Duluth Clinic in 1976. The Hibbing native says there have been many changes during his 30 years treating children. Along with advances in technology, he notes the benefits of immunizations, which have made once common childhood diseases – measles and meningitis, for example – relatively rare. “A lot of young pediatricians have never seen them,” he say

During his career, Bronson helped to establish the pediatric intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He also led the effort to develop programs and services that successfully earned St. Mary’s the designation of Children’s Hospital.

Among the rewards gained from a life in healthcare, Dr. Bronson observes, there is one reserved for those who care for children.

“You get to see children you cared for grow up,” Dr. Bronson says. “You get to see how they turned out. Also, a lot of girls I once took care of as children are now bringing their own children to me, which is especially satisfying.”
