UMD School of Fine Arts announces Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival:

Date: 5/18/2006

Duluth – In its inaugural season, UMD’s Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival, made possible through the generous support of Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin, will bring to Duluth an unprecedented lineup of musical and theatrical performances. Events will take place June 28 through August 20, 2006.

Named in honor of Daniel Greysolon Sieur Du Luth, the explorer for which the city of Duluth is also named, festival performances will take place at Weber Music Hall and Marshall Performing Arts Center, both located in the “Arts Triangle” on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth. The “Arts Triangle” is marked by the Sieur Du Luth sculpture created by Jacques Lipschitz; the sculpture is the image used to identify this festival.

“It’s sure to be an eventful summer,” said Jack Bowman, Dean of the School of Fine Arts at UMD. “Nothing is greater than a warm evening on the hill, a wonderful concert or stage production, and the excitement of knowing you could do it all again the next night. This is truly an incredible opportunity to explore musical and theatrical experiences that might not otherwise be so easy to find in one location.”

The performances, which include “Fooling the Beard” by Adam Hummel, the popular rock opera “Godspell,” a fully staged production of the opera “Rigoletto” by Giuseppe Verdi, a concert version of the opera “Cosí fan tutte” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and chamber music, jazz and opera aria concerts, will feature students from UMD, as well as performers from around the country and across the globe.

“This Festival continues our long tradition for excellence in theatre, music, and opera, and is a collaboration of talents—people coming from all over America and Italy to bring us these wonderful performances,” added Bowman. “It’s also expanding the opportunities available for students to get live stage experience—including the rare opportunity to perform in an opera—and that’s truly invaluable. And for everyone, this festival helps ensure the continued vibrancy of the arts in our region.”

Subscription packages for the Sieur Du Luth Summer Arts Festival will go on sale Tuesday, May 30, at the Marshall Performing Arts Center Box Office. For a complete schedule of performances, call (218) 726-8561 or visit www.d.umn.edu/sfa/sumarts.
