Cleveland Cliffs announces senior management changes

CLEVELAND, Dec. 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (NYSE: CLF) today announced the following senior management changes, which are effective January 1, 2003.

* Edward C. Dowling has been appointed Executive Vice President - Operations.

* Randy L. Kummer has been appointed Senior Vice President - Human Resources.

John S. Brinzo, Cliffs' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "These key management team promotions are consistent with our focus on organizational excellence and executive development."

In addition to his current responsibilities for all North American mining operations, Mr. Dowling, 47, will be responsible for engineering and technology, safety, materials management, environmental management, and theCompany's operations excellence process, ForCE21. He will continue to report to Thomas J. O'Neil, President and Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Kummer, 46, will continue to be responsible for all personnel management and labor relations across the Company. He will report to John S. Brinzo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Mr. Dowling joined Cliffs in 1998 as Senior Vice President - Operations. Before then he was senior vice president for Cyprus Climax Metals Company.

Mr. Dowling holds a bachelor of science degree in mining engineering and metallurgical engineering, master's and doctorate degrees in mineral processing, all from The Pennsylvania State University. He is also a member of the National Mining Association, the American Iron and Steel Institute, the Metallurgical Society, Sigma Xi, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration.

Mr. Dowling and his family reside in the Cleveland area.

Mr. Kummer joined Cliffs in 2000 as Vice President, Human Resources. Prior to that he was vice president - human resources, government and public affairs for Kennecott Energy Company.

Mr. Kummer was graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor's degree in business administration and the University of Utah with a master's degree in human and organizational development. He is a member of the National Mining Association and the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Mr. Kummer and his family also reside in the Cleveland area.

Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest producer and merchant of iron ore pellets in North America. The Company operates five iron ore mines located in Michigan, Minnesota and Eastern Canada.
