UW-Eau Claire's College of Business leads in IS research

1/11/2010

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's College of Business is one of the top 100 colleges in the world for research in the field of information systems and one of its IS faculty members is among the top 100 IS researchers worldwide, according to a study conducted by a professor at the University of Arkansas.

UW-Eau Claire's College of Business was ranked 66th on the top 100 list of international universities for IS research and Dr. Matt Germonprez, assistant professor of information systems at UW-Eau Claire, was ranked 67th on the list of top 100 individual IS researchers.

"UW-Eau Claire was ahead of classic IS heavy hitters, such as Carnegie Mellon, Central Florida, Temple, Texas A&M and University of Oklahoma," Germonprez said. "The ranking is another mark of excellence that distinguishes our IS program from others across the country. The rankings illustrate how UW-Eau Claire is competing on an international level."

Dr. Viswanath Venkatesh developed the top 100 lists by tracking research articles published between 2007 and 2009 in six journals identified by the Association for Information Systems as the premier journals in the IS field.

The six journals are: European Journal of Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, Information Systems Research, Journal of Association of Information Systems, Journal of Management Information Systems and Management Information Systems Quarterly.

UW-Eau Claire's IS department had four papers published in the journals during the 2007-09 timeframe included in Venkatesh's study, said Germonprez, who was a co-author of three of the four papers.

The rankings do not take into account overall departmental publication efforts across all journals, nor does it include successful grant funding, said Germonprez. It is limited to the six journals chosen by AIS to represent top research in the IS field, he said.

UW-Eau Claire's strong commitment to ensuring that its faculty are teachers and scholars provides students across the campus with exceptional opportunities, Germonprez said, noting that faculty who are engaged in research often become leaders in their fields.

"Research always keeps faculty members involved in the practices of our field," Germonprez said. "We are able to understand and explain emerging phenomena that don't always make it into our textbooks. We are able to learn what new industry trends are and bring those to the classroom so we can best prepare our students for careers in their chosen fields."

Only two other UW System business schools were included in the top 100 list: UW-Milwaukee's Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business was ranked No. 27 and UW-Madison's Wisconsin School of Business was ranked 100th.
