St. Scholastica's Emeritus College offers free summer series

6/11/2008

DULUTH, MN – Emeritus College, The College of St. Scholastica’s program for lifelong learners, will offer a series of free classes this summer. Titled “People and Places in Duluth’s History,” the series will be led by Rachael Ewoldsen Martin, a historian and scholar of the region.

Each session will begin at 7 p.m. in Somers Lounge on campus.

June 17: “Duluth’s Top Ten Historical People” Find out who made the list according to a poll of Duluth history students and learn more about their historic contributions.

June 24: “Mrs. Hartley Comes to Town” Martin will portray Mrs. Guilford Hartley, who arrived in Duluth in the 1880’s. Learn about her impressions of the town and her involvement in the Kitchi Gammi Club, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Allendale Farms.

July 8: “Northern Minnesota Women: Myths and Realities” Find out about the types of women who settled in the Duluth area, where they came from and what their lives were like. Separate the myths of these women from the realities of their daily lives.

July 15: “A Swedish Maid at Glensheen” Martin will portray a young Swedish immigrant who came to work for the Congdon family. Learn about her home in Sweden and her experiences in Duluth.

Martin earned her Master of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis in American Studies. She developed a course on the history of northern Minnesota women, which has been offered at all U of M campuses. She teaches local history classes for Duluth Community Education and writes a monthly column on local history for the Senior Reporter magazine.

St. Scholastica's Emeritus College has provided programs for lifelong learners for 26 years. Expanded courses are offered in the fall and spring. For more information, or to be added to the mailing list, call (218) 723-5940.
