Northland College establishes new $900,000 scholarship endowment

8/21/2007

Northland College recently accepted full payment of $900,000 to fund and establish the Charles "Bud" Boehm Scholarship Endowment.

The scholarships from this endowment will be awarded to current and future Northland College students who have financial need and who are in the top half of their high school class. Preference for the scholarships will be given to students from Ashland, Bayfield, Washburn, Drummond, Mellen, Butternut, Glidden, Hayward, and Park Falls High Schools.

"Providing access to high quality education for students from our region has always been an important commitment for Northland College," said Northland College President Karen I. Halbersleben. "The Boehm scholarship endowment allows us to extend this historical commitment. We are grateful to Charles Boehm for his generous support of students from our area who wish to attend Northland College."

Charles "Bud" Boehm established the scholarship endowment in memory of his parents, Charles and Dora Boehm, who were great advocates of higher education. Boehm was raised in Ashland and graduated with a History major from Northland College in 1936. He had a distinguished 33-year career with the U.S. Department of Commerce.

While excelling in his career, Boehm was also one of the most loyal and generous supporters of Northland College. When he passed away, he was very thankful for his Northland College education and wanted to make educational opportunities available to young people, as were made available to him by Northland College during the Great Depression.

"Bud always spoke very highly of his experience at Northland College," said Boehm's nephew, Bill Liebhardt of Davis, Calif. "He would be pleased that the scholarships are going to go to people from northern Wisconsin who have limited resources."
