Americans are not adequately concerned about recent challenges facing U.S. farmers, according to an opinion piece written by Land O' Lakes Inc. CEO Beth Ford and published Wednesday on Fortune magazine's website.

"Farmers are generally too proud and humble to speak out, but the truth is we are living through an extremely difficult period of market turmoil and natural disasters," wrote Ford, who is the the head of one of the largest farmer-owned cooperatives in the United States.
