Send a letter to the Editor ![]() ![]() News From 91.3 KUWS Firefighters send kids through smoke house
The Superior Fire Department smoked out a house today/yesterday (Thurs) at Cooper Elementary school. The idea is to show kids what to do if there is a fire at home. Joe Cadotte reports. “We’re in our bedroom at night. Smoke detectors going off and we can kinda smell a little smoke. First thing we want to do is. Roll out of bed and feel the door.” That’s Superior Firefighter Andy Knutson talking to Cooper elementary first graders. Four firefighters not only brought their fire truck but also a two room fire safety house. Smoke pours under the bedroom door. First grade teacher Annette Albrecht and Knutson guide the first graders out of a window. “There you go, hands and knees. Use the back of your hands, there you go.” (Knutson). “It smells like rotten waffles!” (Kids). “All right now open the window there. Let’s make our way to the window. Nice and saftley, slowly, slowly.” “Hold my breath” (Kids). “Don’t hold your breath too long because then that might keep you from getting out safely.” (Albrecht). Third Grader Amanda Paulson is a three year veteran of fire education. She’s gone through fire education since kindergarten. “It was pretty cool. You feel the door and if it’s hot you should stay down low as smoke is getting in and then climb out the window. You go to your planning place.” “What was the smoke like in there?” “It was…kind of smelt like syrup. The fire, foam would make it go away most likely than water.” Fire fighters visit all city of Superior elementary schools. “Thank you!” (Crowd of kids). Fire fighters will do the same thing Friday at Great Lakes Elementary. Previous KUWS Articles:
