NW Wisconsin healthcare navigators looking for more people to sign up
Not enough people are signing up for the federal Affordable Healthcare insurance in northern Wisconsin, so there’s a push on to get more people onboard. Brad Phenow reports.
Northwest Concentrated Employment Program or Northwest CEP is giving people in Wisconsin an opportunity to learn more about the insurance through the Affordable Care Act. They’re holding free information sessions across 10 Northwestern Wisconsin counties to help people learn more about the health insurance. Marcy Pratt of Northwest CEP says some people have been misinformed.
“Some people believe that their ability to sign up for the Affordable Care Act health insurance ended on December 31st, and that’s just not how it is. People have until March 31st to sign up and be covered with health insurance.”
If you remain uninsured past the deadline you may face a fine on your 2014 taxes. The fine is a minimum of 95 dollars, or two percent of your income. Pratt says people with preexisting conditions who have been denied health insurance should apply.
“They cannot be denied health insurance because of a preexisting condition under the Affordable Care Act.”
Pratt says they’ve been busy getting the word out.
“We’ve put on over 200 informational sessions so far and we’re planning on wrapping up those informational sessions during the month of February and March.”
Pratt says the sessions are giving people a better understanding about the health insurance offered.
“People will have an opportunity to come in and learn firsthand how they can apply and what the benefits of the health insurance will be.”
The sessions are open to the public and Navigators are available for one-one-one sessions. Pratt says it doesn’t matter if you’re insured, employed, or what your income is the insurance can benefit you.
“Everyone who is insured right now and they are happy with their plan, they might find a better plan that’s cheaper by looking at the marketplace.”
To apply for the insurance go to healthcare.gov. For a list of the future informational sessions visit nwcep.org.
