Future of Gordon Fire Hall to be figured out Tuesday
A public meeting will be held in Gordon Tuesday about rebuilding the town's Fire Hall. Brad Phenow has the story.
The fire hall was destroyed by fire last month. It and everything in it was a total loss. In the meantime, fire departments from across the state have pitched in with donated and loaned equipment and trucks. The Highway Department storage building is the temporary fire hall storing the loaner trucks and equipment.
Gordon Fire Chief Michael Chmielecki says the public meeting is part of standard procedure for a new building.
“The public meeting would be to give the town board the go ahead to rebuild the fire hall, which would be the same process as if the town board wanted to build any public building.”
John Cosgrove is Gordon’s Board Chairman. He says the public meeting is a must.
“By law we have to get permission to rebuild and spend money from the people, and I’m sure it will be overwhelmingly supported.”
Chmielecki says it still is early in the process to see any set plans.
“I honestly don’t think we would have a proposal at that time just because some of the contractors, it takes them awhile also.”
Both Cosgrove and Chmielecki hope the numbers will be in from the insurance company in time for the public meeting but it is a slow process. Chmielecki says tracking everything lost is difficult when even the inventory was lost in the fire.
“It’s a long process we have to try and write everything down and remember what we had, an go piece by piece and truck by truck and door by door so it’s a long process.”
Cogrove says that a year from now he hopes to see a new fire hall.
“Maybe a little sooner than that hopefully. We’re running out of time now before we get into the snow season.”
Chmielecki says in order to start rebuilding, the demolition of the rest of the fire hall must be completed.
Chmielecki says they haven’t received a fire call since the fire hall blaze, but they have used the loaner equipment for medical calls.
The meeting will be held at the Gordon Town Hall Tuesday Oct. 15 at 6:30.Previous KUWS Articles:
