Cultural night to celebrate diversity at UW-Superior
Story posted Saturday at 6:38 p.m.

11/10/2012

UW-Superior is looking for ways to help international students and students of color feel right at home. Joe Gigliotti has the story.

Jianxin He from China is the World Student Association President. The UWS junior is looking forward to Cultural Night Saturday. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone, including students, faculty, committees around this area to get together, seeing different culture, sharing different culture, sharing their opinions and ideas.”

This year’s theme is “We Are Born This Way.” “Everyone is unique, especially international students on this campus, everyone coming from different countries, different cultures, even some of them from the same country,, but they have different cultures. :

The 16th Annual Cultural Night starts with a Global Feast at 5 o’clock in the Yellowjacket Union. The dinner will have dishes from nine different nations. International entertainment follows in the Thorpe Langley Auditorium in Old Main. Sophomore Ern Charoenboon (chair-in-boon) is a native of Thailand and the Program Director for the World Student Association. “We have some dancing. Kai Pai from Korea. We have Japanese dance. We have Korean martial art. Singing." :

Charoenboon says the UWS campus is quite diverse. “We have 37 countries represented this year at the UWS campus from all around the world.”

UWS Communications Professor Ephraim Nikoi from Ghana expects a big turnout. “This is a big thing. Every year we have so many people from the community as well as the campus attending. We expect it to be no different than last year which we were able to fill it up – the auditorium – and we are expecting more people this year.”

Nikoi says Cultural Night is a great chance to experience multiple cultures.

“I want to encourage everybody to come by, eat some good food, and enjoy the performances.”
