![]() ![]() ![]() News From 91.3 KUWS UWS welcomes veterans, and gets high grades doing it
G.I. Jobs magazine has named the University of Wisconsin-Superior a “Military Friendly” school. Two student veterans say they can see why. Laura Podgornik reports. Andrew Clark of Duluth remembers when he found out how committed UW-Superior was to their veterans. “Last year when the new G.I. bill kicked in, there was a delay on the payments for tuition and the director of the financial aid office just fixed it for us and trusted us enough and lent us the money so we didn’t get dropped. And that was all on a trust. You know, she trusted us veterans, she didn’t have to do it.” Willie Stack is currently serving at Joint Base Balad in Iraq. The UWS sophomore from Superior enjoys the teaching environment at UW-Superior. One of his favorite teachers is chemistry professor Micheal Waxman. “He’d always like play with frogs and stuff; kind of random stuff like he’d have frogs in his PowerPoint’s. I just thought it was kind of funny.” UW-Superior assistant Dean of Students Tammy Fanning is the faculty advisor for the UW-Superior Vets Club. Fanning says it’s important for student military members to have a smooth transition into college. “I just find it to be an amazing dedication to our country and you know, to all the people in our country to be able to serve like that. If there’s something small that I can do within my job that makes the process of getting their education even easier for them, I will try my hardest to make that happen.” According to G.I. jobs, the ranking places UW-Superior in the top 15% of 7000 colleges and universities nationwide in services offered to veterans.
