Send a letter to the Editor ![]() ![]() News From 91.3 KUWS Spiders, lobsters and sand castles
Kids, sand, water, and music. And mushrooms, castles, even a lobster-spider. That was the scene Thursday on Park Point in Duluth at the Summer Sand Sculpting Contest. Laura Podgornik was there. (sound of beach) On most cloudy days, the beach is quiet but that wasn’t the case during Duluth’s Summer Beach Bash. Kids didn’t need the sun to have fun. (Cody)“We started to create the towers and then we were digging a hole for fun. And then we sort of thought up the World War II trench and miniature…” (Chris)“It’s World War I!” (Cody)“Close enough!” (Chris)“They didn’t use trenches in World War II.” That’s Chris and Cody from the Chester Bowl Day Camp. They competed in the sand modeling contest with their World War I trench, complete with driftwood machine guns. Ethan, Ashley, and Brooklyn from Kid’s Corner Daycare in Cloquet couldn’t agree on what their creation was. (Brooklyn) “A spider” (Ethan) “It’s not a spider. It’s not a spider! It is a lobster.” (Brooklyn) “It was a lobster and then it turned into a spider.” (Ethan) “No!” (Ashley) “Yes it is” (Laura) “So it’s a transformer then, huh?” (Ashley) “Yeah!” (laughs) (Ethan) “Spiders don’t have six legs!” Duluth Parks and Recreation Manager Kathy Bergen helped judge the sand sculptures. Bergen says she saw a lot of castles this year. “We’re looking for creativity, the detail they put into it, the use of natural beach items, how they incorporated that into their design sculpture and what kind of effort they put into making it. Being out here and enjoying the outdoors and digging in the sand is a lot of fun and I think they’ll enjoy it whether they’re a winner or not because in the long run, everybody is a winner.” Around 100 kids created 18 sand sculptures.
