Send a letter to the Editor ![]() ![]() News From 91.3 KUWS State matching money needed or St. Louis River National Estuary project dies
The proposed National Estuarine Research Reserve on the St. Louis River has another friend in Madison. Rich Kremer reports Wisconsin DNR Secretary Matt Frank says it’s too good to pass up. In 2008, Governor Jim Doyle Nominated the St. Louis River as Wisconsin’s pick for a National Estuarine Research Reserve. Now, an environmental impact statement and public hearing are all that stand in the way of a federal designation. Aside from research and education the reserve would bring in $550,000 in federal grants each year. But to get those dollars the state needs to offer a 30% match, or about $236,000 annually. Department of Natural Resources Secretary Frank says it won’t be easy finding the money but the project needs to work. “We’re not going to let this fall apart. We want this to succeed, we know there’s some match stuff. The state budget is tight, there’s not a lot of extra money lying around but this is something we need to succeed on and we’d sure hate to leave federal money on the table because we don’t have a match.” Once designated the St. Louis River would be the 28th National Estuarine Research Reserve in the country and the second on the Great Lakes.
