Duluth engineering firm to move to Superior, groundbreaking today

Connors Point has a new tenant. Rich Kremer reports AMI Consulting Engineers of Duluth is crossing the bridge to make Superior its new home.

AMI is best known for its part in the study of accelerated harbor corrosion. It’s moving its headquarters from downtown Duluth’s Tech Village to the northern tip of Connors Point. AMI President Chad Scott says the move makes sense.

“We do a lot of harbor work. Of course, with the boats, we’ve got three boats and a small barge so we have the need for waterfront access, in getting our equipment in and out and we have a commercial dive team. So, it’s just a perfect fit with all that we do on the marine side.”

Also, Scott says 60% of his business comes from industry in Superior.

“So, it’s a good place for us to be.”

Superior Planning Director Jason Serck says AMI is taking the last spot in the city’s Connors Point tax increment finance district…a place that gives property tax breaks to new businesses.

“It’s great for the city. Another tax paying entity and jobs, jobs are important. So, anytime we can add to that category it’s great news.”

Serck says the best tenants are local ones.

“We like to zero in on some of the local companies because local companies tend to have a little bit longer life and they make their decisions here, they don’t make them down in Atlanta or down in Dallas somewhere.”

Serck says AMI hopes to have construction of their new headquarters complete before January. Meanwhile, Scott says their long-range plan is to build a marina on Connor’s Point as well.
