Inside H1N1 vaccination clinic: We take you there in Superior

Douglas County will have its second swine flu vaccination clinic today in Poplar. Its first public H1N1 clinic Thursday yielded 150 inoculations, most of them in the first hour. Joe Cadotte reports.

Health officials say there’s about 600 doses left over from Douglas County’s first public vaccination for ‘at risk’ groups. Most of the shots were given to adults with underlying medical conditions. Douglas County Public Health Nurse Peggy Nichols met all of them with a smile.

“Feeling okay today? Yea, feeling fine…jet lag. Jet Lag? Yea. Hold your sleeve up just a smidgen…there you go. It’ll take about four seconds okay? That’s alright. There’s just a poke…and you’re done. That’s it? That’s it. Wow, I told you I was good. And the effect time is how long? It’ll take you about eight to 14 days for your body to respond and build up the anti bodies. Anywhere in about two weeks you’ll be completely immune. In the mean time? Any flu symptoms call the doctor. And cover your cough, wash your hands, it’s the best advice for you. Okay.”

International Salesman Bob Banks of Duluth spends most of his career overseas. Seven years ago Banks contracted Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS while on a business trip to Guǎngzhōu China. He still feels the pain. Scars on his lungs from the virus make him vulnerable to other respiratory illnesses like the swine flu. Bank says he’s relieved to be flu proof.

“I spend a lot of time at airports and on air planes and in other countries, so yes I do, I feel a lot better.”

Despite his run in with SARS, Banks says American media exaggerates the severity of H1N1.

“I don’t think I know one person that’s had it. And you see a lot more media exposure in this country than you do in other counties. Does it is mean there’s not a health hazard? Yes there is. There is media exposure but I think its all good.”

The 600 or so doses of H1N1 vaccine left over last week's clinic will be added to the 1000 available at the Mission Covenant Church in Poplar. That clinic runs from 3 to 7 p.m. today.
