Move On Dot Org holds rally in Duluth to go oil free
Story posted Wednesday at 6:10 p.m.

7/9/2008

The Twin Ports MoveOn dot Org held a rally in Duluth Wednesday in an effort to call attention to Senator John McCain’s ties to Big Oil. Amy Swanoski reports on the rally in Canal Park.

Waving an American flag and holding sign proclaiming “oil lobby owns McCain” and “McBush Serves big oil” a group of 15 people gathered in front of the Canal Park ICO. Twin Ports activist Daniel Fanning says the demonstration was part of the National Day of Action to oppose Republican Presidential candidate John McCain.

"These kind of events are going on all around the country right now, there’s about 220 events going around country wide. We’re expecting thousands of people across the country to speak in one voice and say ‘we’ve had enough of high oil prices, we’ve had enough of a dependency on oil and we want to see change”

Fanning wants Americans to know rising gas prices aren’t inevitable and something can be done about it.

“We’ve had a failed energy policy under a Republican president. (Car honks twice) Its time for change, as you can hear from people passing by people support us and the more we can get the word out there and let people know there’s options and its time for a change, and people are backing it.”

Duluth activist Phillip Stern hopes the rally will make average Americans think about energy issues with a global perspective. He hopes they will vote for a candidate with the most comprehensive oil policy.

“I don’t expect the gas station to lower prices but I hope come November people will be able to vote and they’ll vote for a change, for something different.”

The protesters got a few thumbs down from passing cars, but received mainly honks of support from drivers.
