NBC Universal movie people scout out Ashland

Will Johnny Depp and Ashland make a good match? The NBC Universal movie “Public Enemies,’ starring Depp is slated to begin filming in March. Danielle Kaeding reports.

People are buzzing about whether Hollywood will begin filming the movie ‘Public Enemies’ in America's Dairyland. Film Director Michael Mann and six other movie reps visited Ashland on Tuesday to scope out the town’s historic buildings. State Senator Bob Jauch says Wisconsin cities are a natural fit for the film. “John Dillinger hung out in Manitowish Waters—little Bohemia just south of Hurley. There’s an incredible history here. We’ve got the banks and the features and the characteristics and the history.” Jauch says new tax breaks for film companies gives Wisconsin an edge over other states. “We’ve created an equality on the tax side, which means there is a greater incentive for these producers and directors to use our resources.” Since this is a flick on 1930’s bank robber John Dillinger…Ashland Northern State Bank Assistant Vice President Stacey Adams says the movie folks were poking around her establishment. Adams says business boomed when the movie “A Simple Plan” was filmed there in the late 1990s. “The economics had such great impact for our businesses. They needed things at our hardware stores, and they certainly need meals and clothing because it was sub-zero temperatures. We had a very big cold spell. It was just a very exciting and positive time.” Adams says the film reps plan to announce their decision on a filming location in a couple of weeks.
