Superior man takes part in national crusade for gay rights

3/6/2007

A former Superior resident is one of 52 young adults selected nationally to take part in a journey that will bring him across the country to the cause of gay rights. Melissa Burlaga has the story.

Twenty-one year old Justin Hager will be one of the riders going on a bus tour modeled after the freedom rides of the civil rights era. Hager says the Soulforce Equality Ride is a national journey of young adults visiting colleges which openly discriminate against people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. “We spend two months living on coach buses and touring the country and going not to protest, not to change people’s minds, not to change their religious beliefs, but simply to engage in a dialogue about the practices and policies of their schools individuals on those campuses and the way they treat other people.” Hager says being involved in the movement is important. “I’ve also really come to realize that this is so much more than me. It’s so much more than any one of us or any ten of us or any city, any state. This comes down to humanity, it comes down to who we are as human beings and that as human beings we have to love and respect each other as complete packages because ultimately when you break us down to the simplest level we’re all human.” Hager also hopes people will realize the movement is not political. “This is not just a media ploy, that this is not just a political exercise seeking legal rights or political rights. This is about life. It’s about real people, real human beings who are being oppressed and discriminated against every day and the effect that that is having on them.” The ride starts on Thursday and will end on April 28 in Mankato.
