Birkie gets a new trail for its race

12/29/2006

The American Birkebeiner Ski race in Cable will be a little different this year. Melissa Burlaga reports on a new addition.

After the results of a survey of 770 people came back to the Birkie organizers, they decided that they needed another trail. So they added a nine kilometer classic ski trail at the start of the race. Birkebeiner Director Ned Zuelsdorff says it will improve conditions. “What this new trail does is it gives us an opportunity to have the best tracks available for classic skiers and at the same time since we will not groom the first part of the Birkie trail for classic skiers the skaters actually pick up another skate lane, so it should ease their congestion. Zuelsdorff says this is generating more interest from skiers. “I’ve already heard from skiers, especially classic skiers that they are really now seriously thinking about coming to the Birkie because they have heard of what we’ve done.” But, this new addition to the race also comes with new expenses. Zuelsdorff says additional maintenance will cost around $4,000 to properly maintain the trail. “The construction costs have been largely covered by very generous donations from several people and businesses and organizations. So the constructions costs have really been minimal to us. The total is between 13 and 14 thousand and we have had over $10 thousand dollars in donations. The ongoing maintenance, the taking care of the trail, the grooming of the trail will be an additional expense to us that we think we’ll be able to offset with the additional skiers using it.” Zuelsdorff says the new trail will be open throughout the season and encourages anyone who wants to test it out to do so.
