Ships getting ready to winter in the Twin Ports

12/28/2006

Eleven ships will probably be wintering in the Twin Ports staying at local facilities for some off-season maintenance. Mike Simonson reports from Superior.

Duluth-Superior Port Authority Facilities Manager Jim Sharrow says that’s a little below the 12 to 13 ships that usually winter there. Sharrow says each laker means money and jobs to the area. Only one ship…the John G-Munson…will be pulled out of the water for drydock work at Fraser Shipyards in Superior. He says many ships will get maintenance work done from workers at Fraser Shipyards in Superior. Sharrow says each ship will spend about half a million to a million dollars for maintenance work this winter. The Soo Locks close ending the shipping season for Lake Superior on January 15.
