Christian student group at UWS in limbo
Waiting for UW lawyers to come up with guidelines

11/4/2006

The fight to get a Christian group at UW-Superior sanctioned as a student organization is heading toward the UW Board of Regents. Mike Simonson reports from Superior.

The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents is expected to consider guidelines for student groups at its December meeting. The UW-Superior chapter of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship was denied student status last semester by a student government committee because although any student can join, the organization's constitution says the leaders must be Christian. UW-Superior Student Body President Stefan Fletcher says they've put the issue on hold until system legal sends clearer guidelines. "It is always very nice at least from the point of view of any student government president, it's good to get some uniformity across the state and it should allow for sonsistency across the UW System campuses in terms of how organizations are recognized." So for now, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Advisor Ralph Seelke says the students continue to meet at UW-Superior. "We are in limbo but we're functioning fine. The major thing that this year-plus of limbo has done is deprive us of the right to apply for funds, so we have no money this year." The National Chapter of IVCF has filed suit against UW-Superior and the UW System on behalf of the Superior group, which has been sanctioned as a student group since 1947.
