Esko Artist in Residency Program: Duane Barnhart
10/26/2006, 5-7 p.m.
Winterquist Elementary in Esko, MN is hosting an Artist in Residency program, with assistance from the Winterquist Elementary Partners in Education (P.I.E.) group, and the Esko Education Foundation. Duane Barnhart,a nationally known author-illustrator based in Minnesota, is spending 3 weeks in October working with grades 4, 5 and 6. Students are learning how to express themselves through their work, using various cartooning techniques.

The Winterquist Elementary Partners in Education group is hosting an Art Show for the community on Thursday, October 26th from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Winterquist Elementary cafeteria. Work created by the students will be on display, along with a video presentation of the artist’s work. Cost is a non-perishable food donation, which will be collected by Esko Brownie Troop 231, and donated to a local food shelf.

Duane Barnhart juggles many jobs, including magazine writer-illustrator, children's book illustrator, and professional cartoonist. Duane's cartoons have appeared in The Saturday Evening Post, MPLS St. Paul Magazine, Lake Country Journal, Lakeside Minnesota, Cabin Life, and Children's Magic Window magazines. His advertising art has appeared in Time Magazine, Family Handyman, and Reader's Digest Travel magazines. In the 1980’s, Barnhart drew the nationally syndicated cartoon strip, Can You Solve the Mystery? He has illustrated several advertising comic books, designed print products and computer games working with Warner Brothers and Disney cartoon characters. Barnhart has served as editorial cartoonist for the Hudson Star Observer Newspaper and the White Bear Press. As a roster artist for COMPAS/WAITS, and VSA Arts, Duane teaches cartooning to thousands of K-12 students in schools throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin and beyond. Duane has been a featured presenter at the National Arts Educators Convention, National MENSA convention, and the Perpich Center for Arts Education in the Twin Cities. Duane and his wife, Angie created five of the “Peanuts Character” statues in St. Paul, the Minnesota State Fair “Kemps Cow” statue as well as cartoon murals for schools. Duane lives with his wife Angie, his dog, Tasha and his cat, Ms. B near Garrison, Minnesota.

For more information on the program, contact Jeanette Laundergan, Winterquist Elementary Partners in Education Treasurer, 218-879-7647.
