Duluth’s Viking Electric Supply warehouse and office will relocate in January to a new building at 3800 W. Superior St., about six blocks from its current location at 4531 W. First St.

The new location, behind SuperOne’s West Duluth warehouse, will feature a two-story, 36,962-square-foot facility. The first-floor footprint is planned for 29,618 square feet and will include a city desk, showroom, reception area and warehouse. The plan includes a 28-foot ceiling clearance, two receiving dock doors and five shipping docks. In addition, there will be one large overhead door in the rear of the building for larger deliveries and one small overhead door in the front for customer load-out.

The second floor will provide 7,344 square feet of office space including an area for future expansion. Viking’s Duluth staff of 27 will grow by one person initially then add more people as needed.

Greg Irvine, Viking Electric’s current Duluth general manager, will manage the new facility.

“Viking Electric Supply has been discussing a new location for its Duluth operations for a long time, and we are proud to be moving forward with a new building in a new location,” said Irvine, who has been employed by Viking Electric Supply for 35 years. “We are thrilled about the prospects of operating out of a newer, larger facility. It will allow us to grow, expand our services, and better serve our customers in Northern Minnesota.”

Interstate Development, which owns the existing Viking building, is also constructing the new one. It will be leased to Viking on a long term basis.

“We’re excited to expand our space in Duluth to better serve our customers and accommodate growth,” Viking President Stacy Stanslaski said at a Friday ground breaking.

The wholesale electrical distributor is a division of family-owned Sonepar in France. It has 21 locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In addition to Viking’s Duluth operation, the company operates from Grand Rapids and Brainerd.
