Domestic raw steel production inched up for the week ending May 30.

Steel production for the week was 1,206,000 net tons, a 1.3 percent increase compared to 1,191,000 net tons produced a week earlier, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.

The domestic steel mill capability utilization rate was 53.8 percent for the week ending May 30, up from 53.2 percent a week earlier. The rate is measure of steel mill operating rates.

On a year-to-date basis, domestic steel mill production through May 30 was 34,296,000 net tons at a capability utilization rate of 69.3 percent. That's down 16.1 percent from 40,858,000 net tons produced during the same period in 2019 at an 81.4 percent capability utilization rate.

Three Northeastern Minnesota iron ore plants, Hibbing Taconite Co., Keetac, and Northshore Mining Co., remain idle. A fourth, Minntac Mine, has reduced production and its workforce.

Northeastern Minnesota iron ore plants produce iron ore pellets, the primary ingredient used to make steel in open hearth furnaces.
