Barr Engineering plans significant Duluth expansion
Barr Engineering Co. is expanding its Duluth office to accommodate a staff that has nearly doubled in recent years.
The firm will move from downtown to Canal Park by next spring 2014, Barr said last month. More than 100 employees will be moved to Waterfront Plaza at 325 S.
Lake Ave. Barr currently leases business office space at 332 W. Superior St. Its field office will remain at 2314 W. Michigan St.
“We are excited to be moving to a historic space within Duluth that can accommodate our recent and anticipated growth,” said Sheryl Filby Williams, who
oversees Barr’s Duluth office. Barr, an employee-owned company, has had an
office in Duluth since 1996.
“Barr is committed to supporting the greater downtown and Canal Park business areas,” Filby Williams said. “It is exciting to see the growth in the Twin Ports
business community and we are happy to be a part of it.”
In a news release, the company said its own growth is an indicator that other local industries are also doing well.
“While we serve an international client base from Duluth, the majority of our projects are local, and our expansion helps us better serve our clients’ needs.” Filby Williams said.
Barr’s lease of nearly 40,000 square feet in Waterfront Plaza is one of the largest commercial real estate transactions in the Twin Ports this year, said Brian
Forcier, president of the AtWater Group, which helped Barr identify the new location.
“This move reflects the growth and health of Barr,” he said, “ but it also says a lot about our community when such a strong company commits to expanding here.”
“We congratulate Barr on their expansion to a new space and for their success over the years,” Duluth Mayor Don Ness said. “Barr is representative of the
community-minded companies that have helped make Duluth a premier place for business. In recent years, Duluth has become an industry hub for engineering and
environmental professional services with the addition of hundreds of great paying jobs. Barr has been a big part of that growth and their announcement ... makes
that success even more significant to our region.”Previous Construction Articles:
