'Shark Tank' celeb Daymond John to keynote Fond du Lac entrepreneur seminar
Daymond John, millionaire business mogul and a star of the ABC television show “Shark Tank,” will be the keynote speaker during an Aug. 19 entrepreneur seminar at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. The seminar is free and begins at 9:00 a.m. on campus. Advance registration is required through the college website at www.fdltcc.edu and space is limited.
The Your BIG Idea Entrepreneur Seminar is structured as a learning event for aspiring entrepreneurs and established professionals. It is being organized and hosted by the Business Program at the college.
“Through this seminar, we’re providing an opportunity to see and hear entrepreneurial secrets from a business shark who started his career on the smallest scale and has grown it to a massive, global scale,” Dylan Olson, Business Program coordinator at the college and event organizer, said in a news release. “It doesn’t hurt that Daymond John is an engaging, entertaining speaker who currently is one of the stars in a hit television reality show on ABC.”
Creator of the FUBU designer label, Daymond John’s first foray into the apparel market came when he wanted a tie-top hat he had seen in a popular music video, but could not find one for a good price. With the sewing skills he had learned from his mother, Daymond started making the hats for himself and his friends. Realizing he was on to something, Daymond made a sizeable order of the tie-top hats, sold them on the streets of Queens, NY, and made $800 in just a few hours. Over the next few years and through a series of crucial decisions and lessons learned, his brand transcended into mainstream markets and at its peak, FUBU recorded annual sales of $350 million, placing it in the same stratosphere as designer labels such as Donna Karan New York and Tommy Hilfiger.
As one of the sharks on the ABC television show, Daymond and four other prominent executives listen to business pitches from everyday people who are hoping to launch their company or product to new heights. Investing his own money in every project he chooses, Daymond becomes partners with the entrepreneurs and helps turn their dreams into a reality.
Another featured speaker during the seminar is Don Liimatainen, author of The Black Hole Solution and owner of two local start-up businesses. Liimatainen’s first book offers solutions to entrepreneurs to help eliminate holes and solve struggles a business may experience.
Liimatainen is a former Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College student who started Ablaze Custom Cleaning and BizGro Marketing, plus he founded the non-profit organization Best Christmas Ever. He is a 2003 graduate of Lincoln High School in Esko.
His entrepreneurial work was recognized in 2009 when he received the Micro-Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Joel Labovitz Entrepreneurial Success Awards. In 2008, his company Ablaze Custom Cleaning was named a Top-20 Business in the United States owned and operated by a college student. Liimatainen started the company during his time as a student at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
Your BIG Idea Entrepreneur Seminar will also include exhibits, a bag of resources, and several other surprises waiting for registered participants. The seminar begins at 9:00 a.m. in the Lester Jack Briggs Cultural Center Gymnasium and will end around 12:30 p.m.
