Kraus-Anderson completes Spirit Mountain chalet

2/6/2013

Kraus-Anderson Construction Co.has completed a new 10,650-square-foot ski chalet at Spirit Mountain in Duluth. The ski facility, which opened in 1974, has become a year-round recreation destination.

The new building will serve several purposes, including a base area ski chalet and a venue for banquets and meetings. Designed by DSGW Architects of Duluth, the wood-frame chalet contains a large great room with a fireplace and an expanse of windows looking up the ski slope. Other features include the year-round Riverside Bar & Grill, an outdoor patio, ski patrol room, ski rental area, and a new parking lot and bus drop-off area.

This new location off Grand Avenue is West Duluth provides greater access, and will act as a catalyst for continued private development along Grand Avenue, Kraus-Anderson said in its announcement. With the completion of the new chalet and the opening of the new “Spirit Express II” chairlift this winter, Spirit Mountain has now realized approximately 65 percent of its master plan, newly updated in 2008.

The cost of the project, which includes a new “Spirit Express II” chairlift built by Spirit Mountain, is $7 million. The year-round Spirit Mountain Adventure Park features the “Timber Twister” Alpine Coaster; “Timber Flyer” Zip Line; nine-hole mini golf course; and a snow tubing park. New downhill mountain bike trails will open in the summer of 2013.
