Next month, Two Harbors High School, Lake View Hospital and Ecumen Scenic Shores are teaming up to provide a nursing assistant program of study.

A driving motivation behind the three-way partnership in Two Harbors is the desire to make it easier for residents to get training in the city in which they live.

“We want to provide an opportunity for people in our community to get educated and trained and stay in the community and work here,” said Greg Ruberg, Lake View Hospital’s director of rehabilitation services and risk management.

“One of the trends we’ve noticed is that a certain part of our population graduated from school and they don’t move away – maybe they pick up a job in hospitality and it doesn’t pay a great deal,” said Brett Archer, Two Harbors High School principal. “We are excited about this because it takes away those road blocks; driving from here to the nearest college for a lot of people is a road block.”

The collaboration has made the nursing assistant course possible. Two Harbors High School had partnered previously with Mesabi Range Community and Technical College to offer welding and millwright certifications; instructors from Mesabi Range will be teaching this program to prepare students for the state nursing assistant certification. Lake View Hospital will provide the classroom setting, while students will complete their clinical rotations at Ecumen Scenic Shores.
