Century-old Lurye's Furniture plans to close in Superior

12/26/2012

Lurye’s Furniture is closing after more than a century of doing business in Superior.

The closure will coincide with retirement of the store's owners, Harold and Anne Grossman. Lurye's has scheduled a going out of business sale beginning today.

The furniture retailer was founded in 1898 as H. Lurye & Sons by Harry Lurye and his sons Maurice and Edward. At the start, the company focused on stove repairs along with selling a few stove parts and secondhand furniture in a 20 by 40-foot space. Over time, the family expanded to several different locations on Tower Avenue in Superior, becoming one of the most successful furniture stores in northwestern Wisconsin.

A fifth-generation family-owned company, Lurye’s Furniture, currently is run by Harold and Anne Grossman and their daughter Ashley Carlson. The store moved to its present location at 1208 Tower Ave. in 1937.

“The final sale truly is a celebration of the five generations of my family who have been privileged to have the patronage of so many in the Superior-Duluth area and nearby over so many years,” Harold Grossman said in a formal announcement.

Besides furniture, the store also sells Oriental rugs.
