Iron Range Resources moves to secure Minnesota Discovery Center assets

11/20/2009

Iron Range Resources acted today to secure the physical and historical assets at Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm.

Earlier this week, the Ironworld Development Corporation (IDC) announced it would temporarily close the center effective at 5 pm Friday, Nov. 20 due to a financial deficit.

"Iron Range Resources is moving quickly to ensure that the Minnesota Discovery Center complex and its important historical and cultural materials are protected and preserved," said Sandy Layman Iron Range Resources commissioner. "Although the IDC board and staff have earnestly worked to successfully operate the facility, this deficit has caused both the IDC and agency to evaluate future operating scenarios. We will work with Ironworld Development Corporation to determine long-term operational solutions."

Iron Range Resources is utilizing existing agency staff to address Minnesota Discovery Center assets, information technology continuity, building security, utility and maintenance needs, said Layman. Heat, water, and electricity will continue to be supplied to the center, she said.

An internal Iron Range Resources audit of Minnesota Discovery Center financial records is underway. A full accounting of IDC’s financial information has been requested.

Minnesota Discovery Center collects, preserves and interprets the history and cultural heritage of northeastern Minnesota.

The Ironworld Development Corporation is a non-profit which manages and operates the history and cultural center under a sublease/management agreement with Iron Range Resources.

Iron Range Resources, which managed and operated the center until it became an Ironworld Development Corporation non-profit, owns the center's buildings and most of the collections.
