A $1.2 million federal Hazard Mitigation Grant will help 126 homes and businesses in St. Louis County install sprinkler systems to offer protection from wildfires. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded individual grants to residential and business property owners who applied for assistance last year. The program covers 75 percent of the cost of installing the system. Wild Fire Water Hydration systems protected 60 structures in northern Minnesota during the 2005, 2006 and 2007 wild fire seasons. “The Ham Lake Fire (of 2007) was a sobering reminder of the risk property owners in Northeast Minnesota face from wildfire,” said U.S. Rep. James Oberstar, D-MN. “The cost of taking action to prevent property damage is a fraction of the cost we all pay after homes and businesses have been destroyed.” “I believe the first responsibility of a government is to protect its citizens and this funding helps accomplish that by ensuring that families in Minnesota are able to participate in the Firewise program more fully,” said U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-MN. Previous Daily Briefing Articles: |
