Large crowd greets Duluth Aldi

Despite drizzle and fog, customers lined up around the block waiting for Duluth's Aldi store to open Thursday.

Aldi Food Market opened its second store in the Twin Ports Thursday, attracting a line of people that stretched for more than a block.

Located at 1724 Mall Drive, the store is part of a $3.4 billion investment ALDI recently announced to add 900 stores nationwide by the end of 2022, reaching a total of 2,500, said Division Vice President Matt Lilla.

“Everything we do in the store is designed to save shoppers money,” he said. The company claims to sell groceries at prices up to 50 percent lower than competitors.

Aldi opened its first regional store in Superior, then added one in Grand Rapids. With a 12,500-square-foot sales floor, the Duluth store is slightly larger than the one in Superior. Overall, the Dulurh footprint is 20,000 square feet.

“This area has been incredible. People are excited about how much they can save,” Lilla said.

From 15 to 20 people will be employed at the store. ALDI staff work at least 25 hours per week and receive full health insurance benefits and dental coverage.
